Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat age should my child begin learning how to pitch? It is never to early to learn to pitch! One of the most important things you can do for your child is to ensure they learn how to throw correctly at an early age. The pitching basics that are taught by Portland Pitching are tools that will help your son/daughter not only as pitchers, but when they play any of the other positions on the field. Create good habits now that will stay with them for their entire playing career.
What can I expect to learn from Portland Pitching?Throwing a baseball is a very complicated athletic movement, but we break it down piece by piece to ensure your pitcher does it right from the get-go. We MUST master the basics - balance, body position/awareness, and timing - before we can move on to learn the finer points of pitching. You have to crawl before you can walk!
Once pitchers have demonstrated mastery of the basics, the fun really starts! You get to learn about ball rotation, grips, visual tricks, greater power production, body preparation, pitch selection, hitter tendencies, and much more. The best pitchers never stop learning and absorbing information...as long as you want it, we'll keep providing it. How many times per week should I get in-person instruction?Frequency is determined by a number of factors, including player commitment and ability level. Our goal is to give you everything you need to succeed! Below is Portland Pitching's suggestion for session frequency (with at-home practice always included!):
